What has been your biggest challenge in this business?
Getting customers to come to our stand alone location to purchase a specialty toy instead of just buying something at Wal-Mart or Target.
What inspired you to become a Certified Master Retailer?
My husband Tim was the first Certified Master Retailer, and as we had talked through some of the classes and things he was working on, I thought it would be good to go through the program as well, which gave us an opportunity to further discuss things we were learning and ideas we had come up with.
How has being a Certified Master Retailer enhanced your business acumen?
For me, it was a good way to well round my acumen. My husband has a financial background and does a lot of our marketing, so I was able to get some education in those areas that I do not work a lot in.
What is one “a-ha” moment you had while earning your Certified Master Retailer designation?
We realized that the layout of our store should be changed. After a couple of steps in the right direction, I think we finally have it where it is the best it has ever been.
What would you say to someone who is considering become a Certified Master Retailer?
This is a program that any ASTRA retailer should do. It gives great information in all of the areas that you need to have some knowledge in. And the nice part is that you can go at your own pace in whatever order you want. I spent several weekends taking classes while sitting out on my patio enjoying the day, and it was great.
