ASTRA Member Spotlight: Tim Holliday, Children’s World & Children’s World Uniform Supply

We believe these stories are worth sharing! To recognize our community, the ASTRA Blog features a regular ASTRA Member Spotlight series. This week, we’ll be featuring ASTRA members who have received their Certified Master Retailer designation.

What do you enjoy about being in the toy business?
Helping parents find good play value for their kids and seeing their kids have fun.

What has been your biggest challenge in this business?
Getting people to come to our stand alone store to buy a specialty toy instead of going to Wal-Mart or Target.

What inspired you to become a Certified Master Retailer?
I was involved with the Certified Master Retailer program from its conceptual idea at a strategic planning board meeting.  Having been in another industry for our business that has a similar program to the Certified Master Retailer program, I knew this would be a great program and something to differentiate me from my competition.  It’s also a good marketing tool.

How has being a Certified Master Retailer enhanced your business acumen?
It has provided me with good, well-rounded information for my business.

What is one “a-ha” moment you had while earning your Certified Master Retailer designation?
Store design and layout that caused us to re-think the way we had things, and, it has worked.

What would you say to someone who is considering become a Certified Master Retailer?
The Certified Master Retailer program is a great program to help you become a better retailer, toy store owner, marketer and business person.  You can take the classes in any order you want, so you can work on things as you need to prioritize them for your particular store.  When you are done, not only will you have additional knowledge, but you will have a designation that separates you from your competition, and, that you can use for your marketing.  That alone may get you press coverage and more.  This is a program every ASTRA retailer should do.
